Trainer Sir Henry Cecil is full of confidence in his unbeaten colt Frankel as he prepares for a clash against Canford Cliffs this week.
The three-year-old will take on Canford Cliffs for the first time in this Wednesday’s Sussex Stakes at Goodwood.
“At the moment the horse is in very good form and I’m very happy with him in every way at this stage,” Cecil said.
“He looks well and he’s working well. He’s very happy in himself mentally and he’s relaxed. That’s all I can ask really.
“He had his final gallop and it’s just a case of seeing him through until Wednesday now.”
However, Cecil understands the risks of racing, which were so cruelly demonstrated when Rewilding was tragically put down after breaking his leg last Saturday.
“We all want to win and with horses like this there is a responsibility and every day is another day,” he said.
“Things can go wrong either at home or on the racecourse – look at the awful thing that happened on Saturday”
Cecil is going into this week’s Sussex Stakes will a carefully mastered plan.
“Every race is run differently and you’ve got to use your head,” Cecil said.
“We have a plan and we’ll try to stick to it, but if the race goes a different way, we’ll have to try and think of an alternative.
“If he runs to what he’s capable of and everything goes right, he’s got a good chance.
“If I win I’ll be thrilled and if the other horse beats me easily, I have to accept it.
“I don’t really mind about the ground. We don’t want it pouring with rain and bottomless – we want a Glorious Goodwood.”
Cecil said that a track with a little bit of give would suit both himself and Canford Cliff’s trainer Richard Hannon.
“As long as there’s no jar in the ground, I’m sure myself and Richard Hannon will be very pleased,” he said.
